eLABS

Faster lab result turnaround time, better patient care.

eLABS

Faster lab result turnaround time, better patient care.

Why

eLABS exists to improve patient care. In many low-resource settings, paper-based processes and fragmented laboratory information systems mean that patients can wait a month or more for laboratory test results, which delays their treatment. eLABS digitises this process to maximise efficiency, visibility, and accountability, resulting in reduced turnaround time and lower sample rejection rates, meaning improved patient care.

Why health departments make use of eLABS

  1. Efficiency: immediate notifications of patient results via smartphone dramatically improve health system responsiveness and patient care.
  2. Last-mile visibility: near real-time monitoring of specimen testing status at any stage, from ordering to result delivery to the patient.
  3. Interoperable: eLABS easily integrates with existing systems or new tools, such as laboratory information systems and Internet of Things (IoT) devices to monitor the sample temperature in transit.
  4. Confidentiality: patient data is securely stored in the cloud.

What

The eLABS solution is a co-created solution with our partner, Wits Diagnostic Innovation Hub. Information is linked to individual samples and patients using barcodes and efficient master data management

  • Clinicians use a mobile application to request tests and capture a sample barcode and patient details. Once results are available Clinicians are notified through the mobile application and results are triaged to assist clinicians easily identify results requiring action. . Thanks to reduced test turnaround time, patients receive the necessary treatment and care required sooner, supporting improved health outcomes.
  • The eLABS patient support system sends test results, relevant educational messages, and appointment reminders directly to patients.
  • Health authorities have oversight on a web portal, as well as a comprehensive monitoring and evaluation dashboard environment, allowing them to track the process from end-to-end and follow up if they identify any issues.
  • Implementers and funders benefit by receiving real-time insight and data for continuous quality improvement

eLABS currently supports testing for HIV (including EID), TB the following with tests continually being added.

  • Used in more than 3 100 facilities
  • Over 26 300 registered healthcare facility mobile users
  • 170 registered couriers
  • 1 100 registered courier mobile users (344 + 803)
  • With over 22 million test results authorised from 2018 to present
  • 37 registered testing labs

Features and Additions:

  • "Results for Action" are sent to eLABS through alert notifications - facilities become aware of results quicker than traditional methods of result delivery e.g. hard copy, SMS printer or LabTrak Webview.
  • Additional tests being added to eLABS: TB GeneXpert, Infant PCR and other Primary Healthcare Tests
  • Allows for monitoring of:
  • Clients with invalid/rejected VL results being contacted and returning to the facility for a repeat VL
  • Clients with unsuppressed VL results being contacted and receiving enhanced adherence counselling or an ARV regimen switch

eLABS strengthens the third 95% target set by UNAIDS in 2014 which is to achieve viral suppression for 95% of those treated for HIV.

Where

eLABS is used at scale in South Africa and Zambia.

AitaHealth

Community Health Workers use AitaHealth to register, screen, flag, educate, refer, and schedule follow-up tasks for individuals in their area. Management uses the data to design and plan community health interventions and improve linkage to care for individual patients.

Stock Visibility Solution

Over 3,200 service points use SVS to digitise last-mile supply chain functions for critical services. SVS enables these facilities to participate in a networked supply chain where the right commodities are available at the right place and time without waste.

HealthX

HealthX is a digital capability that enables enterprises (e.g., Health Programs, Donors, and Funders) to provide a beneficiary-centred workflow for relevant health and social services. Enterprises are able to proactively plan and deliver services based on beneficiary requirements and needs, enabling a responsive approach to healthcare delivery.

Household Census

Potential social grant beneficiaries are registered, screened, and identified using this mobile application. Social agencies then validate the data using an online web portal and algorithms to predict risks including fraud. The process is completely digital and eliminates the inefficiencies of previously adopted paper-based solutions.

Leap Communicator

Provided through Amref, health workers register to participate in a digital learning community that uses basic mobile technology to disseminate, track, and manage distance learning objectives.
